competitive analysis

Growing up in a family of pharmacists, I spent countless evenings listening to stories from the tales of patients who needed specialized medications, and the creative ways my parents collaborated with other healthcare professionals. At the same time, social networking platforms were on the rise, and I watched as friends not only connected online but launched thriving businesses right from their living rooms. It struck me that the same tools people used to sell handmade crafts or curate online boutiques could serve a much larger purpose.

What if patients, doctors, and medical experts could share knowledge, exchange real-time experiences, and even provide remote care, all through a tailored social platform? With that idea in mind, I began researching.

  • Does medical/ healthcare professionals use any social platform?

  • Is it even a good idea to user such platforms to collaborate?

  • Will there be any security concerns?

  • Will information shared on such platforms be trust worthy?

With these questions in mind I started my research to see if there are any platforms which medicine professionals use. I found few namely- ‘Sermo, ‘Doximity’, ‘Figure1’.

Their solutions were evaluated based on their strengths and weaknesses, highlighting unique offerings from each. While the analysis provided valuable insights, it raised an important question: do users truly have the time to explore and utilize such a wide range of features?

User Interviews

I conducted user research by interviewing five individuals from various medical professions - physicians, nurses, therapists, and MD/PhDs - across different age groups. The goal was to understand whether a dedicated social networking platform for medical professionals would be appealing and beneficial. During the interviews, we explored their experiences with existing platforms, discussed what they like or dislike, and examined the challenges they face in their daily work. The insights gathered were quite revealing, and here are some key findings.

  • Networking Methods
All users have engaged in some form of professional networking—such as private Facebook groups or email lists - although these methods vary widely and are not exclusively designed for medical professionals.

  • Platform Scope
While some users appreciate a unified platform for all medical professionals, others favor more specialized groups tailored to specific fields (e.g., physicians only).

  • Motivation and Features
All users expressed interest in networking, knowledge sharing, and discussing case scenarios. They also want access to news, articles, research papers, and conference recordings. One user suggested notifications for newly available materials.

  • Licensing and Continuing Education
All medical professionals must renew their licenses (annually or every three years) and complete Continuing Medical Education (CME) requirements to stay competent in their field.

  • HIPAA Compliance
A major concern for all participants is HIPAA compliance, deemed essential for any platform dealing with patient information.

  • Pricing Expectations
Most users expect the platform to be freely accessible, with optional paid features.

  • Time Constraints
Users report extremely busy and stressful lives, making it challenging to dedicate time to networking activities, family, or leisure.

personas

The personas were developed based on each user's mental model. While every medical professional has unique needs, they all prioritize secure networking, knowledge sharing, and professional growth

I began by focusing on the menu and dashboard design, aiming to let users quickly absorb all essential information at a glance. Familiar elements were crucial to minimize cognitive load and foster intuitive navigation. Because research shows that users typically scan web pages in an F-shaped pattern, I placed the menu vertically on the left-hand side. I also kept the menu prominently visible at all times.

Preliminary Sketches

Wireframes started giving a visual form to the concept in mind. It surfaced some problems users might face in future, which were handled in very early stage. Users also got high level idea about what this platform will offer and how it will work.

Logo design

Designing logos is one of my favorite tasks. While designing this logo some keywords about this application were very helpful to seek inspiration from. Also the company name was given high attention. Some rough sketches were made and then digitized the shortlisted ones. Also experimented using different colors. I decided to go with the dark navy blue logo as it pops and will go nicely on any neutral color background.

Color pallet and Typography

Keywords about the company were helpful here as well which portraying the brand. Fonts as well as colors were selected to give professional look. Mainly blue and green tones were given preference to show relevance to medical field.

iconography

Custom icons were designed from scratch to address user needs, provide an appealing aesthetic, and offer quick recognition.

component library

Comprehensive component library was designed before diving into actual high fidelity screen designs. It helped keep consistent look and speed up the design process.

high fidelity wireframes

Screens were designed with simplicity and efficiency as top priorities, recognizing that medical professionals have limited time. The minimalist layout, featuring a streamlined color palette, helps users complete tasks quickly. Prototyping was also introduced to provide a clearer understanding of the platform’s usability

usability testing

Summary

The usability test involved 7 users with varying expertise and went smoothly, providing valuable feedback. Participants first explored the application after a product concept explanation. They then completed tasks including:

  • Finding and connecting with a professional

  • Liking and commenting on a post

  • Marking news as a favorite and locating it in the favorites section

  • Editing and updating their profile

Success factors

  • User was able to browse through the application very easily, without any help

  • User was able to complete the assigned task smoothly

  • Users found the application simple enough and need under 2 seconds to browse through and find the intended page/information

Feedback collected –

Overall, users loved the application's simplicity, clean look, and ease of navigation. They appreciated the color palette, icons, and the exclusivity to medical professionals. The ability to mark posts as favorites was particularly valued, as it helps them easily revisit important content lost in a sea of updates. However, there was some concern about the redundancy between learning, news, and favorites, suggesting that their presentation or design might need to be adjusted for clarity.

One of the most crucial user requests was the addition of a call and meeting feature for quick, real-time conversations. I swiftly incorporated this functionality and updated the screens accordingly.
